Mastering Text in Design: Best Practices

  1. Text is a key element of any design, which is why it is important to pay attention to the way text is used in a designing. By following these simple tips, you can use text on design in an impactful way.Keeping it simple is the best way to use text in an effective manner. When creating something, you want people to see both the design and the text or the message you are conveying. By using too many elements and components, you are likely to create a complex design that is not easy on the eye. It is thus advisable to avoid using too many tricks and tools when adding text to your design.

Keeping it simple does not mean you cannot go big when it comes to font size. By using large text, you can add weight to lettering and make it easier to read against any design. Smaller text, on the hand, can be difficult to read.

Often, the text gets lost in the design and can be hard to find and read and one of the biggest issues you may face when adding text on design is emphasising or highlighting the text. One of the best ways of making text stand out, especially on a design that contains a lot of colour and differences between light and dark sections, is to use a frame around the text.

Contrast is an element of typography that is important to consider when using text on design. Contrast can be used to make text legible and clear. Like using frames, the correct combination of contrasting colours can make a text stand out on a design.

When adding elements to a design, you are essentially making use of space and the right use of space can have a significant impact on the viewer. Negative space is the empty or open space around an object that defines it and this element of a design can be used to identify the focal point.

If you want to highlight or emphasise the text used on a design, you can manipulate the empty space around it so that the text stands out. This can be done through neutral negative space or contrasting negative space.

Negative space also gives a design a sense of balance and the lack of negative space can make a design look crowded and busy. This will have an adverse effect on the overall design, weakening the impact it has on the viewer.

It is thus important to consider the use of negative space to not only highlight text but also create a design that is not cluttered.
